WESTERN UNION FAQs

Domestic & international wires and Western Union transfers initiated through TranZact – your portal to all Southwest Corporate Services

WHAT IS THE WESTERN UNION TRANSFER SERVICE ?
The Western Union Transfer Service is an IMMEDIATE money transfer service developed by Western Union. Your credit union can send money as a service to your members or to a specific individual for business purposes. The service is available through Southwest Corporate, a Western Union Agent, during business hours.

WHAT IS IMMEDIATE?
Most Western Union Money Transfers are available for payment within minutes after your sending point (Southwest Corporate) initiates the transaction. Southwest Corporate's Funds Transfer Department will relay credit union's transaction requests within one hour of receipt.

HOW DOES THE WORK?
Authorized senders in your office simply input the transfer information into Southwest Corporate's TranZact system or call in the transaction to Southwest Corporate's Wire Room representatives. Southwest Corporate initiates the transfer and debits the credit union's account at Southwest Corporate for the amount of the transfer.

HOW MUCH DOES THE WESTERN UNION TRANSFER SERVICE COST?
Consult your most recent Southwest Corporate Pricing Schedule. There is no minimum usage requirement or setup fee to establish the service.

WHAT ARE SOME WAYS WE CAN USE THE WESTERN UNION TRANSFER SERVICE ?

  • Emergency Money - anytime someone needs money fast, you can send it quickly with the Western Union Transfer Service and it can be picked up at any of the hundreds-of-thousands of worldwide Agent locations.
  • Payroll or Expenses - if you have employees outside the office, their payroll, expense reimbursements, and/or other advances can be paid at any Western Union location.
  • International Capability - if your member needs money overseas, Western Union can send it to over 200 countries and territories.

WHAT PROTECTION DO I HAVE?
Only those employees that you designate with Southwest Corporate as "Authorized Sellers" of Western Union transfers may initiate a transaction via call in or TranZact.

HOW IS THE MONEY PICKED UP AND IS IT PAID IN CASH?
Western Union has hundreds-of-thousands of agents worldwide. They range from supermarkets to local retail establishments. There is an Agent in virtually every city, town, village and crossroads in America. You can locate the nearest Agent by utilizing the Western Union web site www.westernunion.com or toll-free phone number 800.325.6000.

The receiving party will complete a yellow form entitled to "Receive Money" and their identity will be verified before they can receive the money. The Western Union system will print a check. Most Agents are prepared to cash the check in the complete amount; however, for very large money transfers some agents may direct the receiving party to an institution that can accommodate the large cash amount.

DOES THE RECEIVING PARTY PAY ANYTHING TO PICK UP THE MONEY TRANSFER?
No, Western Union does not charge a fee to pay out the money to the recipient.

WHAT ABOUT INTERNATIONAL LOCATIONS?
Western Union can send money to over 200 countries and territories. The sender must indicate which country the funds will be received in when placing the order. Funds will be paid in foreign currency in most cases.

WHAT RECORDS ARE AVAILABLE TO HELP ME MANAGE MY WESTERN UNION TRANSFER SERVICE MONEY TRANSFERS?
Southwest Corporate will provide the credit union with an internal reference number to identify the transaction in case any tracking or research is necessary. Once Southwest Corporate uploads the transaction information into the Western Union system, Western Union provides Southwest Corporate with a reference number called the "MOD Number". If the receiving party is having trouble getting the funds, a credit union representative who is authorized to engage in Western Union transactions may call Southwest Corporate's Wire Room to request the MOD Number. This number may assist the receiving party and the Western Union Agent in completing the transfer.

WHAT HAPPENS IF THE RECEIVING PARTY NEVER PICKS UP THE TRANSFERRED FUNDS?
The funds are available in the system for up to 30 days. If they are not picked up, Western Union will purge the transaction and the funds will then be unavailable to the receiver. Within 4 to 6 weeks Southwest Corporate will be refunded for the transaction and the credit will be passed on to the credit union's account at Southwest Corporate.
